MELBOURNE, Australia | The Sri Lankan who attempted to enter the cockpit of a Malaysia Airlines plane in the middle of the night claiming to have a bomb was released a few hours earlier from a psychiatric hospital, the Australian police said on Thursday.

"He was out (Wednesday) of psychiatric care, and we think he then bought a plane ticket, before going to the airport and boarding," the police chief told reporters. The Australian State of Victoria, Graham Ashton.

Several passengers managed to stop on the ground and tie the madman before the aircraft made an emergency landing at Melbourne Airport. Officers from an elite unit of the police then boarded to take over the man.

The suspect, who lived in a suburb of Melbourne in Dandenong and studied at a kitchen school, claimed to have a bomb that actually turned out to be a Bluetooth speaker barely bigger than a smartphone, Ashton said .

He added that the case was not terrorist, but involved a man suffering from psychiatric disorders.

Calvary of an hour and a half

The Malaysian Deputy Minister of Transport, Abdul Aziz Kaprawi, had previously dismissed the terrorist thesis from AFP: "This is not a misappropriation. A disruptive passenger tried to get into the cockpit.

However, passengers reported an ordeal of one and a half hours.

Andrew Leoncelli, a former local Australian football star who traveled in business class, told the 3AW radio that the man had threatened to blow up the plane.

"A member of the crew told him," Sit down, sir, sit down, "and he said, 'No, I'm not going to sit down, I'm going to blow up the plane,'" he says.

"The employee shouted 'I need help, I need help'. So I unfastened my belt and I approached him. "

The 42-year-old former Melbourne player said the rascal had run backwards, where two men grabbed him and tied his fists.

Commissioner Andy Langdon said the occupants of the plane had a "very traumatic experience", adding that the passengers and the crew had been "heroic".

Another passenger, Arif Chaudery, recounted that he had joined several others to control the madman. "Families, children were very scared, some shouted," he told Channel Nine television. "Three or four of them are there" to help control man.

"We threw it on the ground, the crew brought a belt, they tied it arms and legs and put it face down against the ground," he said. Laura, a passenger who only wanted to give her first name, told ABC that she had been scared for her life.

"I thought the plane was going to  jav streaming crash, I thought the bomb would explode, I really thought I was going to die," she said.

This incident comes a few months after the suspension of international searches by Australia, Malaysia and China to find the wreck of Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 mysteriously disappeared three years ago.

The Boeing 777 vanished on March 8, 2014 with 239 people on board shortly after its take off from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing.
